April 2015, during the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro surf contest, the third leg of the World Championship Tour’s Australian circuit, a series of massive swells aligned for the elite international surfing event. These waves were the largest tour competitors had surfed in the 2015 season—the heaviest days seeing swells range from twelve to fifteen feet, which meant faces of the waves were often double to triple overhead. For the majority of the event’s holding period the dark open ocean lines peaked and broke along the West Australian coast, and were captured by World Surf League cameras, and live streamed for surf fans and wave enthusiasts.
